Happy Birthday Hutchinson!
That Podcast in Hutch visits with Reno County Historical Society curator David Reed to unpack the 50-year-old time capsule contents
At the time of its founding in 1872, Hutchinson was among the hundreds of little towns platted on the Kansas prairie, with big ambitions for the future.
In the years that followed, Hutchinson boomed - thanks in part to its strategic location on the Arkansas River, the rail lines that moved goods in and out of the town, and the creativeness and ingenuity of the city’s first generation.
Fast forward to 2022, and Hutchinson’s 150th Anniversary. On Aug. 18, the city will mark the occasion with a mile-long party along Main Street. (Links to information is included below). And earlier this week, a group gathered in front of Hutchinson City Hall to unearth a time capsule that was buried 50 years ago, in 1972, and replace it with another time capsule that will be revealed in another 50 years, in 2072, on the city’s 200th Anniversary.
In this week’s episode of That Podcast in Hutch, I visit with David Reed - who is the curator with the Reno County Historical Society and the Reno County Museum. We unpack some of the items that were found in the time capsule, talk a little about what was placed in the new time capsule, and explore why humans bury artifacts in the ground to be brought back to life at a future point certain.
If you have even a passing interest in Hutchinson or Kansas history, I think you’ll enjoy this conversation with David. Even if you’re not so big on history, I think you’ll find interesting our chat about humanity’s desire to live on through artifacts.

There's a reference to a time capsule placed in Massachusetts by Paul Revere and Sam Adams. Here's a Washington Post story on it and here's another story that provides the inscription on the silver platter believed to have been etched by Revere.
