That Podcast in Hutch - Goodbye 2021
Reflections on the past year, and looking to what *must be a better year ahead
I joked with a friend the other day that if 2020 was a dumpster fire of a year, in 2021 it seems someone dumped a truckload of manure on top of everything and then lit that on fire.
But I was visiting with my son, and remembered that last New Year’s Eve, we watched “Death to 2020” on Netflix - and how much fun we had. That started me thinking about the other moments of 2021 that were a little less dumpster-fiery, manure ala mode.
Among the best experiences of the past year has been the chance to put this podcast together. It’s given me an opportunity to try something new and outside of my comfort zone, to interview some really interesting people with incredible stories. And it’s given me the chance to hear from listeners who have been gracious, kind, and supportive as I’ve learned to do a new thing.
In this week’s episode, I sit down with my producer Christopher Acker and we reflect on the past year of our podcasting experience - and how what began somewhat apprehensively has now moved into our 20th episode. We also look to the future, new ideas we want to try, and what we’ll need from listeners (and readers) to keep moving forward.
We have exciting developments coming soon - including some live events, increased social media presence, and more conversations with incredible people. (At the bottom of this newsletter will be information about the first of those unique events we have planned for Jan. 8).
And for regular followers of ThatGuyInHutch, don’t worry - I’m going to have plenty of content coming your way for regular readers and subscribers of the newsletter.
Thanks for all your support in this past year, and for helping Chris and I feel like this project has been worth the time and effort. It’s rewarding to hear from listening, and we’re hopeful that we’ll develop an even bigger audience in the next year - and you can help by telling your friends about ThatGuyInHutch and ThatPodcastInHutch.

Live event announcement!!
Before recording yesterday, Chris and I had a sort of crazy idea.
I have a fundraiser/legislative send-off event for my campaign set up on Jan. 8. Two, actually - one at Crow & Co. from 10 a.m. to noon, and another at Sandhills Brewing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
What if, we wondered, there was a way to combine our podcast efforts with the already scheduled events?
Here’s what we came up with - Chris will be at both events with me. If you’re a reader who doesn’t know anything about podcasts, but is interested in learning, Chris will be available to show you the ropes - including getting the appropriate podcast apps installed on your phone. He’ll also have his recording gear set up, and we’re inviting people to make a 2-3 minute statement about what they’d like to see in the upcoming legislative session, which begins on Jan. 10. If we get enough comments from people, we’ll put them all together and make an episode of it - so I hope you’ll join us and say a few words.
While ThatPodcastInHutch will be recording and providing tech support for new podcast listeners, I want to be clear that this in concert with a political event/fundraiser. But whatever brings you down, I hope to see you there.
(Just in case, I’ll say that this was paid for by Probst for Progress, Erin Swearer, treasurer).
