That Podcast in Hutch - Tim Smith
What's going on in the trucking industry - from a trucker's view
This episode began several weeks ago, with a text message from my long time friend Tim Smith.
He sent a link to an article titled “The Trucking Industry is in crisis. Here’s how government can help” - followed by his statement “So many things wrong with this article.”
From there I started thinking more about the supply chain issues we’ve all read about - and see in local chain stores. And I started thinking about what I’ve read about how one of the key breakdowns in the supply chain has been in the over-the-road trucking industry.
According to most reports, there’s somewhere around an 80,000 driver shortage - and that means goods aren’t getting transported from coastal docks and production centers inland to your supermarket or retail store. But as I looked through various news accounts, I found that there’s been talk of a trucker shortage for upwards of 30 years.
And where most articles reach out to fleet owners and associations, I wanted to talk directly to someone who has made his living by driving a truck. Tim has talked to me about some of the issues in trucking before, and today you’ll get to hear what’s really happening - from the view of someone sitting in the truck seat.
