That Podcast in Hutch - Tyler Kershner
And all about how and why we do the annual Biking Across Kansas
Every year, I join a few hundred friends to ride our bicycles across the state of Kansas. We start near the Colorado border - this year in Syracuse - and end at the Missouri border - this time near Louisburg. In all, the ride generally spans around 500 miles over a week.
For those of us who do this, it’s much more than a series of bike rides. It’s an experience, a cleansing, an exorcism of sorts. It is what each of us needs it to be. Some ride as fast as possible to get to the next town. Others take their time, stopping in each town and visiting with strangers. That’s normally how I approach the ride, unless it’s blisteringly hot, as it was this year.
It’s often hard to explain to people why we find this fun. It’s usually hot, often windy, and normally physically and mentally challenging. For this week’s episode, I try to offer some insight into the “why” by bringing on one of my best friends, Tyler Kershner.
Tyler and I met years ago on Biking Across Kansas, and we’ve returned year after year to enjoy the new experiences. In 2020 and 2021, the event was sadly cancelled due to Covid, but this year’s event was a return to normalcy - and a reminder for us how important this event is in our lives.
I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation with Tyler. I think it’s a fun look at the world of “tour” cycling, and might provide a little encouragement for others to dust off the bike and remember what the world looks like at a slower pace.
In addition to the podcast, I’ll include a few fun photos from this year’s BAK below.
